Beauregard the Beautiful Bassest!

Hot Spots: More Than Just an Itchy Patch! 🐾
Hot spots (also called acute moist dermatitis) are painful, inflamed areas of skin that can appear suddenly and spread quickly. They often start from excessive licking, chewing, or scratching due to allergies, moisture, parasites, or skin irritation.
Did you know that pets with extra skin folds—such as Bulldogs, Pugs, Shar-Peis, Basset Hounds, and other wrinkly breeds—are more prone to developing hot spots? Those adorable folds can trap moisture, dirt, and bacteria, creating the perfect environment for skin infections.
Signs of a hot spot include:ā€ØšŸ¶ Red, moist, irritated skinā€ØšŸ¶ Hair loss in the affected areaā€ØšŸ¶ Constant licking, chewing, or scratchingā€ØšŸ¶ Pain, itching, or a foul odor
Treatment often includes clipping the hair around the area, thoroughly cleaning the skin, and medications to treat infection, inflammation, and the underlying cause.
Don’t underestimate the ā€œcone of shame!ā€ 🩵 While your pet may not love wearing an Elizabethan collar (E-collar), it plays a huge role in healing by preventing licking and chewing, which can make hot spots larger, deeper, and much more difficult to treat. A few days in a cone can save weeks of discomfort!
šŸ’™ Prevention is key! Keep skin folds clean and dry, stay up to date on flea prevention, groom regularly, and don’t ignore excessive scratching or licking.
If you notice a suspicious skin lesion on your pet, give us a call. Catching a hot spot early can make all the difference in your pet’s comfort and recovery!

Rocky, the cutest cocker spaniel, was seen here at Arrow for ingesting human medications!

šŸ’Š Human medications can be life-threatening to pets. 🐾
It only takes one dropped pill or an unattended bottle for a curious pet to get into trouble. Many medications that are safe for people can be extremely toxic to dogs and cats—even in small amounts.
Common medications that can cause serious illness include:
• Pain relievers (ibuprofen, naproxen, acetaminophen)
• Antidepressants and ADHD medications
• Blood pressure medications
• Sleep aids
• Diabetes medications
• Vitamins and supplements (especially those containing xylitol or iron)
Signs of toxicity can include vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures, weakness, difficulty breathing, abnormal heart rhythms, or collapse—but some pets may not show symptoms right away.
🚨 If you think your pet has ingested a medication, don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary hospital immediately. Also, calling a pet poison hotline to speak with a veterinary toxicologist is one of the most important first steps. A toxicologist can identify the risks of the specific medication, calculate the dose your pet may have received, and provide a treatment plan tailored to your pet’s situation. This guidance helps your veterinary team deliver the safest and most effective care as quickl as possible.
The best treatment start with fast action. Keep all medications securely stored out of reach, and if an accident happens, seek help right away—it could save your pet’s life. ā¤ļøšŸ¶šŸ±
